Apple Mail and Outlook on the Mac

On a Mac, you add your e-mail address to Apple Mail or to Outlook for Mac. Keep the details from All settings at a glance: servers, ports and security to hand. The names may differ slightly depending on the version of macOS.

Apple Mail

  1. Open System settings and click Internet Accounts. Or open the Mail app and choose Add Account from the Mail menu.
  2. Choose Add Other Account and then Mail Account (in the Mail app: Other Mail Account).
  3. Enter your name, your e-mail address and the password for this address, then click Sign in.
  4. If the Mac can't find the settings, it will ask for the details. Enter:
    • User Name: your full e-mail address;
    • Account Type: IMAP;
    • Incoming Mail Server and Outgoing Mail Server: your domain name or your package's server name.
  5. Click Sign in and choose which apps may use the account (tick Mail).

The Mac chooses the ports and security itself. If sending or receiving doesn't work, check these in Mail: choose Settings from the Mail menu, then Accounts, select your account and open Server Settings. Switch off automatic management of the connection settings there and enter: incoming port 993 with TLS/SSL, outgoing port 587 (or 465) with TLS/SSL, and your full e-mail address as the user name for both.

With a configuration file from DirectAdmin

DirectAdmin can create a configuration file that adds the account to a Mac, iPhone or iPad in one go.

  1. In DirectAdmin, go to E-mail Accounts.
  2. Click the three dots (1) next to the e-mail address and choose Download Apple iOS, iPadOS, Mac Configuration (2).
  3. Open the downloaded file on your Mac. Go to System settings; the profile will be ready to install there (under Privacy & Security, under Profiles, or as a notification at the top).
  4. Install the profile and enter the password for your e-mail address if asked.

Please note: The configuration file uses the server name that DirectAdmin knows for your domain, usually mail.yourdomain.nl. If you get a certificate warning afterwards, or it doesn't work because your website is hosted elsewhere, remove the profile and add the account manually as described above, using your package's server name (see All settings at a glance: servers, ports and security).

Outlook for Mac

  1. Open Outlook and choose Settings from the Outlook menu, then Accounts.
  2. Click the plus sign and choose to add a new account.
  3. Type your e-mail address and click Continue.
  4. Choose IMAP as the account type.
  5. Enter: your full e-mail address as the user name, the password, the incoming server (your domain name or server name) with port 993 and SSL, and the outgoing server (the same name) with port 587 and STARTTLS, or port 465 and SSL/TLS.
  6. Click Add Account.

Just like the new Outlook for Windows, Outlook for Mac can also run your account through Microsoft's cloud. If you don't want that, use Apple Mail or Thunderbird instead.
