How do I publish my site with Dreamweaver?

This article is not covered by our regular support and is purely intended to give you extra help.

The first step to make uploading with Dreamweaver MX possible is to create a local site on your computer and a remote site that corresponds to your web hosting with us (either Windows hosting or Linux hosting). The local site tells Dreamweaver where on your PC the website files are, and the remote site indicates where the images, pages and any download files belonging to your website are.

Below is a step-by-step description of how to define local and remote sites in Dreamweaver MX 2004. In earlier or later versions this may work slightly differently, but the idea stays the same. We used an English version; the Dutch version (or our translation) may use slightly different names.

  1. Start Dreamweaver MX.
  2. Open the Site menu at the top of the navigation window.
  3. Choose Manage Sites…
  4. Choose New and choose the type Site.
  5. Under site name, enter the name of your site in Dreamweaver MX. You only see this in Dreamweaver MX, so you can give it any name you like.
  6. Define a local root folder by clicking the folder icon next to the text field. Use the dialogue box to find the local directory where the website files are and accept it. The local site is now ready. Although you can use Dreamweaver to upload files to the remote site that are not in this directory, it is better to make sure all files that need to be uploaded are in this directory. It keeps things clearer.
  7. Next, enter the full URL of your site, so http://www.yourdomain.nl, in the HTTP Address field. Make sure you replace www.yourdomain.nl with your own domain name.
  8. Choose the Remote Info heading in the left-hand panel.
  9. Under Access, choose FTP.
  10. In the FTP Host field, type www.yourdomain.nl.
Important: again, replace yourdomain.nl with your own domain name, and do not add a prefix such as http:// or ftp://.
  11. If you use Linux hosting with us, enter the following in the host directory field: /domains/yourdomain.nl/public_html. If you use Windows hosting, enter: /httpdocs.
  12. In the Login field, enter the FTP username. You can find this name in the email with your account details. You may also have created your own FTP user via the control panel. In that case the path in step 11 may need to be slightly different.
  13. Enter the password in the Password field. This can also be found in the email with your account details.
  14. Now click Test to test the connection. If the connection fails, see the 'Troubleshooting' section below.
  15. Click the OK button and save the new site in Dreamweaver. You can now use Dreamweaver to publish the site.

Troubleshooting:

  1. If the message says that Dreamweaver cannot find the host or server, check that you entered your domain name correctly. If the name has only just been ordered or still needs to be transferred, it is better to enter the server name instead of your domain name. You can also find the server name in the email with your account details. For example win01.webawere.nl or linux33.webawere.nl
  2. If Dreamweaver says it cannot open the remote folder, check the Host Directory field.
  3. If the message says you do not have permission to publish to this site, check the username and password carefully. Pay attention to upper and lower case letters and make sure you do not copy any spaces.
  4. If publishing works but the site is not visible, restart your browser.
  5. If our default page remains visible, our index.html may still be there. Delete it manually from your hosting account.
